World Obesity Day 2026
On the occasion of World Obesity Day (March 4), themed “8 Billion Reasons to Act on Obesity,” an awareness program was conducted to highlight the growing concern of obesity and its impact on overall health. Obesity is a chronic and complex disease characterized by excessive body fat accumulation due to factors such as calorie imbalance, sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet, hormonal disorders, stress, and genetic influences. The session emphasized that obesity is not merely a cosmetic issue but a major risk factor for serious conditions like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, dyslipidemia, respiratory disorders, joint problems, and certain cancers. It also shed light on the psychological and social aspects of obesity, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional eating, and social stigma, which further complicate weight management. From a clinical perspective, obesity is now recognized as a chronic inflammatory condition associated with insulin resistance and metabolic disorders, including concepts like sarcopenic obesity. The program highlighted the importance of prevention through a balanced diet, regular physical activity such as yoga and walking, stress management, and adequate sleep. Additionally, naturopathy treatments like Atapasana, diet and nutrition therapy, hydrotherapy, and mud therapy were discussed as effective natural approaches for weight management. Overall, the session emphasized a holistic approach to obesity management, focusing on lifestyle modification, mental well-being, and long-term health rather than just weight loss.
